Abstract

This paper deals with communication using optical fibers. The transmission using high bandwidth can handle
vast amounts of information, which can be further improved by reduction in fiber losses, increase in data rates and
distances, development of optical sources and detectors compatible with fibers. The recent development in the area of
fiber optic communication as well as the advances in different fiber types and their properties, optical sources, detectors,
system limitations and applications are also discussed in the paper.
